Volvo is a Swedish car manufacturer founded in 1927 by  Gustav Larson and Assar Gabrielsson who where the founders of the SKF group. Volvo has been under ownership of Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co (Geely) since 2010. Polestar is a sister company of Volvo and operates under the Geely group along with Lotus.

Assar Gabrielsson and Gustav Larson quoted  in 1927 "Cars are driven by people. The guiding principle behind everything we make at Volvo, therefore, is and must remain, safety".

They produced their first car, the Volvo ÖV 4 in 1927 and went on to produce the PV444 by 1947, which then began to be sold into the American market by 1955.

By the 1970's the company needed to merge in order to survive, they neraly merged with Saab and the Nowegein State in the late 1970's but neither came to fruition. A deal to merge with Renault in 1993 was blocked by the Swedish Stockholders association, so the company acquired DAF in the 1970's and went on to build one of the UK's best selling cars, the Volvo 340.

In 1999 Volvo sold it's passenger car business and concentrate on their commercial vehicles. They bought a 5% stake in Mitsubishi Motors and sold their passenger car business to Ford.

Over the next 10 years Ford would push Volvo "up market" to compete with Mercedes and BMW and introduced the Volvo S80 and XC 60. By the end of 2009, following the Global Financial crisis, Ford wanted to ofload Volvo and the process began to find an invester. In 2010 a deal with Geely was completed.

They went on to introduce the S90, V90 and XC90 and by 2015 they were making record breaking sales and are deemed a quality premium vehicle.

In February 2020, Volvo and Geely announced that the companies have started formal discussions about a merger of business. Geely currently owns Volvo, however, Volvo Cars has largely been allowed autonomy with its resources.

Did you know:

  1. In Latin, the word Volvo means: "I spin". However the nearest meaning is “I roll”.
  2. Volvo introduced the two-point safety belt measure in 1957. The automaker kind of revolutionised the idea of car safety.
  3. Volvo has a highly unusual piece of machinery in its Gothenburg test lab. Originally intended to assess how buildings withstand earthquakes, Volvo has modified it to crash test cars.  The company carries out 450 full-scale tests per year, taking up to 10 days to prepare for a full test. Cameras then record 1,000 frames per second and the crash test barrier weighs 800 tonnes. That’s how the company secures its reputation for building the world’s safest vehicles, inspiring confidence among motorists across the globe.
