Toyota Motor Corporation produces vehicles under five brands, including the Toyota brand, Hino, Lexus, Ranz, and Daihatsu. It also holds a 16.66% stake in Subaru Corporation, a 5.5% stake in Mazda and a 4.9% stake in Suzuki.
Toyoda's first passenger car, the Model AA was produced in 1936 and was origanally sold as a Toyoda until the name was changed in 1937 to the company we know today, Toyota Motors.
Between the 1940's and 1980's they produced trucks and small sized cars called the Toyopet. It rapidly expanded it's production accross the world. It was highly popular in the US and by the 1980's thet would build production plants there too.
It also had success in motorsport from the 1970's with the Toyota Corolla , Celica and Supra and by the 1990's the brand became very succesful in the UK (especially with the MR2, Celica, Supra and Camry).
This led to the creation of Toyota building a plant in the UK ( TMUK / Toyota Manufacturing United Kingdom) in December 1989.
By 1983 Toyota decided to expand it's horizon's and build a luxurious for car and enter a new market. It developed a car over the coming years and finally produced the Lexus LS by 1989.
Over the coming years the success of Toyota has made them a leading car Manufacturer (second to VW) producing over 10 million vehicles a year, they were the first company to acheive this figure in any one year. In 2012 they had reported their 200th Millionth vehicle.
Toyota is the leading manufacturer of hybrid electric and Hydrogen fuel celled vehicles. From 1997 (when it first produced an electric Rav 4) to 2017, the Toyota and Lexus brands would sell over 10 million electric vehicles.
From 2009-2012, the company's reputation would come under threat after it had to recall around 17 million vehicles around the world for safety and mechanical reasons. In the same period the company faced the 2011 Tsunami and earthquakes. They had lost around 150,000 production units to the Tsunami, whilst in the same year the Monsoons in Thailand had destroyed around 240,000 units.
Today, Toyota Motor Corporation sells 33 Toyota and Lexus hybrid passenger car models and one plug-in hybrid in over 90 countries. They are also investing in AI and Uber Drives.

- Toyoda literally means "fertile rice paddies". This was one of the reasons for changing it's names to Toyota. The other was because it took eight brush strokes (a lucky number) to write Toyota in Japanese.
- The current Toyota CEO, Akio Toyoda, is a direct descendant of the company’s founder, Sakichi Toyoda. In fact, every single CEO to date has been a descendant of the original Toyoda.
- The Toyota Corolla has sold over 40 million units worldwide. This places it in the pantheon of the best-selling car models in history. The company recently earned over £209 billion worldwide in one year, topping the combined sales of the Honda and Nissan, their two closest competitors in the region.
- Toyota has the highest record of patents, standing at over 1000 global patents. The company is all set to introduce numerous new models in the coming future
