Smart is a German Brand found in 1994 by Daimler AG and sits under the Mercedes-Benz Brand. Since March 2019 a 50% stake of the company belongs to Geely (Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co.) who own Lotus, Polestar and Volvo brands.

The origins for the Smart car concept date back to 1982 when the CEO and founder of Swatch watches Nicolas Hayek began to develop the idea of a small city car that would seat two people and have a hybrid drivetrain.

In 1991 he made an agreement with Volkswagen but by 1993 when the new CEO joined the board, he scrapped the project and made an agreement with Daimler AG's Mercedes Division in 1994.

The Smart City Coupe was launched in 1998 and went on to produce a roadster and the ForFour.

Since the 50% ownership with Geely in 2019, both Daimler and Geely will build a new production plant in China and will start development of the future range of the Smart cars.

Did you know:

  1. The Smart car logo consists of a silver “C” with a little yellow-orange triangle filling the gap. Next to it, is simply the word “smart.” The silver “C” stands for compact, given that the Smart car is a compact car. The arrow represents forward-thinking. This is also fitting as the parent companies wanted the Smart car to be one of the most advanced cars on the market.
  2. The “Smart” meaning is a shortening of the phrase, “Swatch Mercedes ART.”
  3. The Smart car wanted to start off as an electric car brand but the technology was expensive and not as efficient as the manufacturers would have liked. When the technology caught up, Smart produced electric versions of their cars. The models can get 128 miles on a single charge and the batteries fully charge in a speedy three hours.
