Porsche (Dr.-Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG) is a German high performance sports car maker that was founded in 1931 by Ferdinand Porsche and has been owned by Volkswagen since 2012.

Porsche (Dr.-Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG) is a German high performance sports car maker that was founded in 1931 by Ferdinand Porsche and has been owned by Volkswagen since 2012.

Although the company did not start with production of cars, it offered motor development and consulting. One of his first taskd came from the government to design a car for the people (which translates from Volkswagen). The result was one of the worlds most inspirational and successful car designs of all time.

By 1939 Porsche had produced the Porsche 64 but production efforts had to be averted to the war. Porsche assisted the military with Volkswagen beetle chassis to produce armoured vehicles and tanks.

As the war concluded in 1945, the Wolfburg factory fell to the hand of the British and Ferdinand Porsche  lost his position as chairman of Volkswagen. He was later arrested for war crimes (for having thousands of people forcibly working at the factory for the war efforts) and was imprisoned for 20 months.

His son Ferry Porsche decided to build his own car in his fathers absence and went on to build the 356 and lay the true foundations to the Porsche company.

By the mid 1960's Porsche had produced the 550 Spyder and the infamous 911 was becoming popular on the racing scene and the retail sales were booming. This inspired VW and Audi to forge alliances by the mid 1970's anf the VW-Porsche 914 and the 924 were introduced.

In 2011 Porsche would merge Volkswagen in a complex arrangement. Volkswagen AG agreed a 51% ownership stake for Porsche in return that Volkswagen took over the management of Porsche. By 2015 VW AG controlled major brands Audi, SEAT, Skoda, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche, Ducatti and VWFS.

Porsche today is still a 100% subsidery and still produces some of the most best looking high performance cars with a high desirability.

Did you know:

  1. The British Army Major, who was put in charge of the factory when Ferdinand Porsche was ousted, the Volkswagen company magazine dubbed him "The British Major who saved Volkswagen".
  2. Ferdinand Porsche's nephew, Ferdinand Piëch, was chairman and CEO of the Volkswagen Group from 1993 to 2002, and is chairman of the Volkswagen AG Supervisory Board since then. With 12.8 percent of the Porsche SE voting shares, he also remains the second largest individual shareholder of Porsche SE after his cousin, F. A. Porsche, which had 13.6 percent.
  3. The prancing horse on the Porsche Crest is similar to the horse on the Ferrari Crest. For Porsche, it makes sense: it’s actually integral to the coat of arms for the city of Stuttgart, Porsche’s home. Ferrari only uses it because an Italian fighter ace shot down a pilot over Stuttgart in WWI, and the ace’s mother told Ferrari to use the horse as good luck.

  4. The Harley Davidson  V-Rod features an advanced, 60 degree, double overhead cam engine that was developed specially for Harley’s racing division, by Porsche.
