Peugeot is a French car maker founded in 1896 by Armand Peugeot and one of the oldest car Manufacturers. Today it is part of the  FCA /Groupe PSA  alliance and has been since  Peugeot bought a 30% stake in Citroen in 1974 and took full control in 1975.

The Family business goes back to 1810 and were associated with manufacturing coffee mills and bicycles (Le Grand Bi Penny Farthing). By 1858 the family applied for the Lion trademark and Armand Peugeot went on to build the companies first car / steam tricycle in 1889.

Highly unreliable, he shifted his efforts to the combustion engine in 1890 with Daimler and the Panhard motor company. By 1896 Peugoet did not want Daimler input and started to produce their own engines. Armand Peugeot decided to setup his own company Société Anonyme des Automobiles Peugeot.

Here the company grew and evolved it's engines and designs as well as producing motorcycles and racing cars. By 1903 it was supplying 50% of all French cars. This gave Peugeot the financial power to invest and produce cars all around the world.

In 1975 they took over Citroen and by 1978 they took control of the European arm of Chrysler.

By the 1980's they produced the iconic 205 / 205 GTi, 405, 309 and 306 that remained their best selling cars.

In 2006 they closed the Ryton plant in Coventry where they produced the 206 and subsequently around 2300 jobs were lost as well as over 5000 in the supply chain.

Did you know:

  1. The first car race ever recorded was Paris to Rouen in 1894. There were some rules – cars had to be not dangerous, easy to drive, and cheap during the journey. “Easy to drive” basically meant that steam cars were not eligible to win. Albert Lemaître took the victory with his 3 hp Peugeot Type 7.
  2. First car ever stolen was Peugeot. Well, there is nothing to be proud about making the car that was the first to be stolen, but maybe that means that Peugeot cars were desirable? This happened in 1896 in Paris, when Peugeot of Baron de Zuylen was stolen by his mechanic.
  3.  Peugeot tried stepping into Formula 1 and produced engines for several teams in 1995-2000 seasons. However, Peugeot engines proved unreliable and not as capable as those of other manufacturers. Peugeot pulled out of the game without getting a single victory.
