Nissan (Nissan Motor Co.) is a Japanese car maker based in Yokohoma. It was founded in 1933 by Masujiro Hashimoto. Nissan  has been owned by the Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance since 1999 (with Mitsubishi joining in 2016).

It makes the Juke, Leaf and Qashqai at the Sunderland plant and can produce 1/2 Million cars a year with around 7000 employees.

Renault holds a 43.5% stake (approx) in Nissan, while Nissan holds a 15% stake (approx) in Renault.

The founder, Masujiro Hashimoto setup Japan's first automotive company in 1911 called Kaishinsha Motorcar Co where he developed and produced the DAT car (the beginnings of the Datsun journey). By 1925 the company was renamed DAT Motorcar Co and begun production of trucks and the first Datsun car (type 11) in 1931. "DAT" for the company name derrived from it's investors Den, Aoyama & Takeuchi. The "SUN"  for the "Son of DAT".

Nissan came about in the 1930's when Yoshisuke Aikawa ( a wealthy businessman and politician) founded a Holding company named Nihon Sangyo for a number of metal and mining companies such as Hitachi. This was abbreviated on the stock exchange as Nisan / Nissan.

In 1933 DAT became affiliated to Tobata Castings (a Nissan Company) and so the Nissan Journey began.

Nissan went on to build the Datsun car and built cars for Austin (under license). By 1964 their Datsun 240z was a massive hit and placed Nissan on the Global market.

By 1996 the merged with Prince Motor Company (most renowned for the Prince R380 race car, the Skyline and Gloria and Fairlady Z).

It had incorporated the Infiniti brand as it's Luxurious division and Nismo as it's performance and tuning division.

By 1999 the company merged with the Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance  following financial difficulties and newly appointed CEO Carlos Ghosn was charged with turning the fortunes around.

His achievements were amazing! Revving the Micra, introducing the Juke, Qashqai, X-trail and 350Z  put Nissan in the Top 7 producers and restored their financial issues.

Did you know:

  1. Nissan used to have a booming aerospace industry. They designed and developed engines for the Lambda 4S-5 spacecraft which launched Japan’s first-ever satellite, the OHSUMI.
  2. Nissan has revived the Datsun brand after almost three decades. The company released the Datsun Go, a slow, basic hatchback car. However, it is available only in emerging markets. Although the first line of Datsun’s Go is available only in India, they will also be released in other selected countries such as Indonesia and South Africa.
  3. The Nissan Pulsar GTi-R was by most accounts a pretty insane car — a 227 hp AWD hatchback built for rally racing. But it had also had a very convenient secret. Hidden in the driver side doorframe was a compartment that stored a full-size umbrella.
  4. Carlos Ghosn achievements in revitalizing Nissan were noted by the Japanese Government, which awarded him the Japan Medal with Blue Ribbon in 2004. Sadly he was removed from his post in November 2018 under allegations of under-reporting his earnings, missue of the companies assets and misappropriations of Nissan funds. The company questioned a further £10 Million in questionable expenses and since December 2019, he has fled to Lebanon (against bail conditions).
