Mitsubishi's automotive dates back to 1917 when the Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. introduced the Mitsubishi Model A , it was based on the Fiat Tipo 3 and was hand built. Having proven expensive they were dicontinued after producing 12 cars.

It wasn't until after the second World War that they began to reproduce vehicles but these trucks buses and motor cycles. Infact it was 1953 when they introduced the Mitsubishi 500. It went on to produce the Colt 1000 in 1963 and the Galant in 1969. It was now producing around 75,000 cars a year by the end of the 1960's and the company decided to create a seperate company for their cars. In April 1970, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation.

Over the coming years Mitsubishi would form an alliance with Chrysler (creating the Dodge Colt in America) between  1971-1993.

In the early 1990's it was reported Mitsubishi would take over  Honda , however this did not happenand they went on to form alliances with Volvo and Volvo trucks where they produced the Carisma.

in 2005 they collaborated with Groupe PSA (Citroen and Peugeot) to make the 4007 and Citroen C-Crosser (based on the Mitsubishi Outlander).

  1. The logo of three red diamonds, was shared with over forty other companies within the keiretsu, predates Mitsubishi Motors itself by almost a century. It was selected by Iwasaki Yatarō, the founder of Mitsubishi, as it was suggestive of the emblem of the Tosa Clan who first employed him. It was also because his own family crest was three rhombuses stacked atop each other.
  2. The name Mitsubishi consists of two parts: "mitsu" meaning "three" and "hishi"  meaning "water caltrop" or"water chestnut".
  3. Mitsubishi was at the heart of one of the biggest scandals in Japanese history, by "covering up" and denying  major defects on their cars. It was known that the scandal dated back to 1977 for failing breaks, clutches and fuel leaks. In turn they were ordered to recall over 163,000 vehicles in 2004.
  4. Mitsubishi Lancer and Eclipses may have skyrocketed in popularity thanks to the Fast and Furious films, where the cars are highly modified.  Jackie Chan also uses Mitsubishis in almost all of his movies.
  5. Mitsubishi will be best recognised amungst petrol heads for the Lancer and commercially for the L200.
