Mini is a British automotive marque that was founded in 1969 by the British Motor Company (BMC) and now owned by the BMW Group.

BMC owned the brand names for Austin and Morris and the Mini dates back to 1959, when sold as the Austin Mini and Morris Mini before becoming it own marque / brand in 1969.

The Mini was created following the fuel shortage caused by the Suez Crisis in 1956. The current head of BMC at the time (Leonard Lord) learnt about the popularity of the small fuel efficient car (the Fiat 500) and claimed to get rid of these and provide the UK with a "real miniture car".

The Mini was a hit throughout the 1960's and 1970's and the expansion of new lineups and models were introduced (Mini pickup, Mini Countryman and Mini Van to name a few) but it was a friend of the Mini desginer John Cooper (who owned Cooper Car Company and built Formula One cars) saw potential in the Mini and soon the Austin and Morris Mini Coopers were born.

Mini went on to  merge with Leyland Motors in 1968 to form British Leyland. By the 1980s, British Leyland was broken-up and in 1988 Rover Group, including Mini, was acquired by British Aerospace.

Then in 1994 BMW acquired the Rover Group and production of the new lineups that we are familiar with today were launched in 2001.

Did you know:

  1. In 1999, the Mini was voted the 2nd most influential car of the 20th century, behind the Ford Model T, and ahead of the Citroën DS and Volkswagen Beetle.
  2. In 1969, the original British Mini was featured in the gold-heist film The Italian Job starring Michael Caine and Noël Coward. Then in 2003, the latest new MINI Cooper was shown in a remake of The Italian Job.
  3.  The original Mini was named Britain's favourite car of all time. It has around 700 Mini clubs around the world (around 470 in the UK).
