MG is a British car Manufacturer that was founded in the 1920's (exact date is not confirmed but suggested in 1924 when the first MG Octagon was trademarked). It was founded by Cecil Kimber and The MG Motor Company was founded in 1928 along with William Morris.

It all started while Cecil was working as a Sales Manager for Morris Garages and he would modify and rebadge a the Morris Oxford car to MG Super Sports. By 1928 the demand was good and warranted it's own name and the MG Motor Car Company was founded.

Kimber remained with the company until 1941 following a wartime working issue and subsequently died in 1945 in a Railway accident.

MG went through many hands of ownership in the following years. It merged into the Nuffield Organisation & Austin merger that became the BritishMotor Corporation (BMC) in 1952. Then British Leyland in 1968 and the Rover Group.

By 2005 the MG Rover Group entered receivership and the MG brand and assets were purchased by  Nanjing Automobile Group (which merged into SAIC in 2007). SAIC is a Chinese state-owned Automotive manufacturer in Shanghai.

The MG's were being reproduced in China in 2007 but took 6 years to come back to the UK with the all new MG-6 in June 2011.

Over the years whilst under the ownership of British Leyland, the Rover Group and BMW it had produced some of the familiar models that most 40-50 year old people would have owned and known. The Austin R MetroMaestro, and Montego range. More importantly, the MG RV8 and the MG-F which is what the MG is most remembered for.

Did you know:

  1. Aussies love MG - They have one of the highest concentrations of MG Car Clubs in the world (one in each state).
  2. The MG is now the fastest expanding group in the UK
  3. The company produced more than 511,000 MGs from 1962 to 1980. Roughly 60 per cent came to North America and after the Second World War, North America accounted for more than 50 per cent of the MG cars produced. -- Maybe the British should reback the iconic brand!!
