Alfa Romeo is an Italian luxury car manufacturer, founded by Frenchman Alexandre Darracq  as Società Anonima Italiana Darracq (SAID) in 1910. It has been owned by FCA/PSA Groupe since 1986.

Alfa Romeo is an Italian luxury car manufacturer, founded by Frenchman Alexandre Darracq  as Società Anonima Italiana Darracq (SAID) in 1910. It has been owned by FCA/PSA Groupe since 1986.

In late 1909, the Italian Darracq cars were selling slowly, and the Italian partners of the company hired Giuseppe Merosi to design new cars. On 24 June 1910, a new company was founded named A.L.F.A. (" Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili", "Anonymous Lombard Automobile Factory").  The brand is better known for it's sporty vehicles and has been involved in car racing since 1911.

In 1915 Alfa lacked the funds to switch over to wartime production, which is where Nicola Romeo enters the story. A prosperous engineer and entrepreneur from Naples, he acquired the firm, building aircraft engines and portable compressors, making a mint in the process. Naturally, as new owner, he had to add his name to the concern, and Alfa Romeo as we know it was born.

The RL and the Torpedo were produced and entered the racing scene with Enzo Ferrari by 1920. Eight years later Nicola Romeo left Alfa and the Italian Government took over.

Production ceased following World War II and it wouldn't start production again until 1954. From then it introduced the 158, GTA and 2000 and concentrated their efforts in racing. The company re grew following it's success in the WRC but would fall into financial dificulty by the late 1970's.

The Fiat Group bought the company in 1986 and went on to produce the 147 and 156 models to add to it's lineup.

Did you Know:

  1. Enzo Ferrari himself ran the Alfa Romeo racing team for about 10 years? His world-famous prancing-pony logo even appeared on their cars.
  2. Alfa Romeo was effectively acquired by the Italian government in 1933. Believe it or not, the company remained under national control until 1986 when Fiat bought it.
  3. The Quadrifoglio versions of the Giulia and Stelvio are the most powerful Alfa Romeos ever. The Ferrari-sourced 505-horse V6 engine found in each delivers more HP than anything else they’ve built, and that includes Formula 1-winning racecars.
  4. Alfa Romeo's logo incorporates two heraldic devices traditionally associated with its birthplace, the city of Milan: a red cross, from the emblem of Milan, and the biscione, a big grass snake swallowing a child—emblem of the House of Visconti, rulers of the city in the 14th century.

Overall Alfa Romeo provide some sporty looking cars, that go in hand with it's sporting pedigree history. The vehicle line up is great (especially the Quadrifoglio). They're reasonably priced but lack some desirability in the UK, mainly due to previous reliability issues.

That said, the brand is growing and we wouldn't say no to owning one.
